About the Painting
The Tingari Cycle, which is a series of sacred and secret song-lines. These Tingari Cycles are associated with his Dreaming sites at Marua, Mintarnpi, Wanapatangu, Minna Minna, Naami, Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay) and Yarrawangu, which are all in the Gibson Desert in Western Australia. These were some of the places where the Tingari Ancestors stopped for ceremonies during their travels across the country.

About the Artist
Barney was born in 1928 and is from Warburton Western Australia. His group is Ngaatjatjarra and he resides in Kintore. Barney is a composed and good – natured person. He was born in the desert near Warburton, WA. He is a full traditional member of his clan group.

In his earlier years he worked as part of the early surveying teams that passed through Kintore area. During this period, he used to ride camels. At one time he took a heavy fall and broke his arm.

He attended school at Warburton and used to paint since early childhood. Barney grew up and worked with all the eminent artists of the region.

Barney is married in the traditional way to Maize Campbell, they live in Warburton. They have four children, 2 daughters and 2 sons. Their two sons are named Kelly and Desmond and their two daughters are named Lisa-Sandra and Sharleen Campbell. Both daughters are currently living in Warburton.

Barney has been immersed in his painting for a long time. He became involved a considerable time before the acrylic movement of Papumya even began. He has learned his skill and techniques from a number of Traditional Aboriginal Artists over the years.

His country spans approximately 150kms around the Macdonald Ranges. This area encompasses many salt lakes and wells to the east and west of Kintore.

Barney paints a number of dreaming stories and depictions of the sacred Tingari cycle, and also of the Macdonald Ranges and Tjukurla areas. Barney uses different techniques together: one style is the use of roundels in dot form, whilst the other incorporates block and dot with stripes across the canvas. These bands of colour area placed across the work in oblique angles giving the work a stunning appearance.

Owning to health problems Barney must undergo visits to Alice Springs hospital. Currently he is residing at White Gums Camp situated near Alice Springs – this is one of many Aboriginal Town Camps of Alice Springs.

Barney is a highly respected member of his people following a very traditional lifestyle – he is very confident and proud as an ambassador of his people. His artwork is purely natural – this reflects his persona and spirit of his family, his country, and his people.
