About the Painting - Rockpools
In this painting the artist Cathy expresses her appreciation for the land, the sea and my youth. During her youth she would hunt and gather saltwater mussels, camp out bush and do all things positive in life with those close to me. “Rockpools” is a reflection of these times.
About the Artist - Cathy Snow
Cathy was born into the Gkuthaarn Clan in 1954. She has seven brothers and five sisters and spent her first four years on Magowra Station where her mother was born and worked in this, their traditional country.
Cathy attended school in Normanton after first having correspondence on Alderley Station. She then went on to live in Palm Island for three years and went back to Normanton to finish off her schooling. She then went to work at the age of sixteen in Camooweal where where she met her husband. Cathy returned to Magowra Station and worked there for twenty-five years before moving to Normanton where she now resides. She has three children and five grandchildren.
But the best time I had was when I was growing up was going out bush, camping and living off he land which is now depicted in my paintings. In those days we had to walk everywhere if we wanted to go hunting and gathering. I loved gathering saltwater mussels, which are nearly always found in most of my paintings now.
Cathy’s passion has become painting. I can express my culture through my artwork. My trademark colours are black and red, and I like to do most of my artwork in these two colours. I have a deep appreciation of the land, the sea and all the positive things in my life. My paintings area a way of expressing the stories that have been told from my mother and older siblings. Today I can’t seem to stop painting as I’ve got a book full of my mother’s stories, and ready to put them on canvas.
Cathy’s mother influenced her enormously. She passed on direct knowledge of the land and her cultural background as she had spent most of her life around her elders. My mother was raised by her grandparents and they would go on walkabout to different parts of the Gulf including Burketown, Karumba and various stations around the Gulf. This is when she was taught her culture, language and history and she became a walking book of knowledge of their traditional past, their land and their history. She told me stories of the hardship that they went through on a daily basis. Through her stories and growing up I learnt of my history and culture.
