About the Painting - Leaves

Jeannie Petyarre paints representations of the traditional plants that her people collect and use as food sources and for medicinal purposes. In particular, she represents the Bush Yam and Bush Medicine Leaves, both of which show flowing representations of leaves from various nutritional and medicinal plants

About the Artist - Jeannie Petyarre

Jeannie lives on Boundary Bore Outstation in the Utopia region Outstation with her family, husband Henry Long Kemarre and their six children. She is sister to Greeny Purvis Petyarre, senior elder at this outstation and Gloria Petyarre, another very well known Utopian painter.

In 1988, Jeannie Petyarre was part of the group who produced Batik work using desert design on silk and cotton. Jeannie was encouraged by her aunt, the famous Emily Kngwarreye to continue to paint her family's Yam Dreaming.

The subject of Jeannie's painting tends to revolve around representations of leaves collected around her country and used for a variety of medicinal purposes. In particular, she returns again and again to "Bush Yam Leaves" and “Bush Medicine Leaves", both of which themes show flowing representations of the leaves. Typical of Utopian artists, Jeannie rejoices in the use of colour.

In 1990, her work was chosen to be part of the Robert Holmes a Court Collection, which toured extensively and was featured in their book "Utopia - A Picture Story". All of Jeannie's Dreamtime stories come from the Alhalkere Country and are passed down to her from her father's side. Jeannie paints the Yam Seed, Yam Leaf, Yam Flower Dreamings, body paint, Mountain Devil Lizard and My Country Dreamings. Jeannie's tribal name is "Angiltha" which means little lizard.

Today, Jeannie Petyarre spends her time between her homeland at Utopia and in Alice Springs.
