About The Painting - Body Paint
A lot of Candy’s works depict the feminine stories of the mythical Tingari Cycle, with fine lines and repetitive patterns often carried out in two colours.
The Tingari Cycle represents a collection of ceremonies, religious stories, and laws that were transmitted to the inhabitants of the Western Desert by the Tingari.
Candy’s style is reminiscent of the optical line work painted by artists like George Tjungurrayi but is more angular and repetitive. Her artworks often have a similar illusionary effect.
About the Artist - Candy Nelson Nakamarra
Candy was born in Yuendumu in 1964 to Gladys Napanangka and renowned Papunya Tula artist Johnny Warangkula. Her mother was visitng Yuendumu on cultural business when she gave birth to Candy.
Candy grew up in Papunya with her parents and brothers and sisters, Lindsay, Mike, Narlie and Dennis Nelson. Candy a ended Papunya school and Yarara College in 1980.
Johnny Warangkula taught his children how to paint while passing down all the family stories to them.
The most significant of these is the Kalipiynpa Water Dreaming story, which is represented in the majority of Candy’s works. Kalipinypa is a claypan covered in a stony deposit that helped to trap water after heavy rains. This resulted in the propagation of wildflowers and other plant life.
Candy has three children and her husband has passed away. Candy became a member of Papunya Tjupi in 2009. Since then she has proved herself to be a very committed artist who comes to the Art Centre every day. In 2014 Candy was nominated by the members to take on the role of a Director of Papunya Tjupi Arts for the first me.
